About the AVFRA
Since 1969 the Apple Valley Firefighters Relief Association (The Relief) has been providing retirement benefits to its members and dependents. The Relief is a separate legal entity from the Apple Valley Fire Department that receives money and manages this money to provide retirement and other benefits to its members (paid on call firefighters) and beneficiaries (retired paid on call firefighters).
There are two major sources of revenue in the fund; the first is Minnesota State Fire Aid and the second is received through a property tax levy that the City of Apple Valley levies each year to support The Relief.
The Relief board of Trustees consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and two Trustees each of whom are elected for three-year terms. Also on the board are the following statutory members: the Chief of the Apple Valley Fire Department, the City Clerk and the Mayor of Apple Valley. Active and deferred members are eligible to be elected as trustees and one of the six trustees may be a retired member receiving a monthly pension who is elected by the membership of The Relief.
